Lead: Bandai Namco has announced Gundam Battle Operation 3, a free-to-play team combat game for PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam with cross-play, and a Japan-only network test is already booked for November.
What happened with Gundam Battle Operation 3
Bandai Namco Entertainment revealed Mobile Suit Gundam Battle Operation 3 on October 28, 2026 during its Gundam Games 40th Anniversary livestream, alongside a gameplay trailer. Gematsu reports the developer as Bandai Namco Forge Digitals. The game is free-to-play with some paid content, runs on PS5 and Steam, and supports cross-play between the two. The official site lists the release date and age rating as TBD and supports 1 to 18 players.
The structure stays close to the series formula. Two teams fight over relay points and enemy bases, and pilots can leave the cockpit to fight on foot, plant base bombs and call in support fire. New for this entry are SP Skills, special abilities tied to each mobile suit, a Battle Assist feature, and a reworked interface meant to make combos easier to pull off. A social hub called Base Camp sits between matches.
The launch roster draws from the Universal Century, including Mobile Suit Gundam, The 08th MS Team and 0083: Stardust Memory, plus Mobile Suit Gundam SEED from the alternative timelines. Gematsu reports that two to three more alternative-universe series are planned for the first year. Language support covers English, Japanese, Korean and Chinese. Siliconera lists Chinese, English and Japanese audio with Korean subtitles.
A first test is already scheduled. Bandai Namco’s Japanese site lists an advance network test on November 20 and 22 Japan time, open to Japan-based Battle Operation 2 players who apply between the October 29 maintenance and November 8. Testers get rated matches of up to 6 versus 6, with custom matches of up to 9 versus 9 on November 22. Gematsu adds that a wider open network test is also planned.
Why it matters
Battle Operation 2 has had an unusually long run. It launched on PS4 in Japan in July 2018, reached English-speaking players in October 2019, moved to PS5 in January 2021 and arrived on Steam in May 2023. Bandai Namco tends to support each entry for years: the first game ran from June 2012 to July 2017. A sequel resets a live-service game that has stacked years of units and balance changes, which is great for newcomers and awkward for veterans with big hangars.
Leading with SEED is a clear signal. Universal Century is the series’ backbone, but SEED has one of the franchise’s biggest fan bases, and putting it in at launch tells players this is meant to be a broad Gundam game, not a One Year War simulator. The infantry layer is still the part that sets Battle Operation apart from other mech shooters. Having a soldier sneak in and blow up a base while giant robots trade fire overhead is the moment that makes these games click.
It also fills a gap. Another new Gundam game, Gundam Rogue Orbit, is set for March 5, 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, so Battle Operation 3 gives the anniversary lineup a long-running online game next to that launch.
