Pokémon Unite End of Service Set for March 23, 2027 on Switch, Mobile

Lead: The Pokémon Unite end of service is now dated: the 5-on-5 battle game will shut down on both Nintendo Switch and mobile on March 23, 2027, its operators announced on October 27.

What happened

An official notice on the Pokémon Unite website says service ends at 00:00 UTC on Tuesday, March 23, 2027 (9 a.m. in Japan), for both the Switch and the iOS/Android versions. Shutdown steps started right away. As of 05:00 UTC on October 27, sales of Aeos gems, the game’s premium currency, were suspended, along with new UNITE Club memberships and automatic renewals for existing members. Players can keep spending gems they already own until the servers close, and current club members keep their benefits until their current membership period runs out.

A farewell update is scheduled for November 12, 2026. It adds a special event where players can collect items including Unite licenses and Holowear released over the game’s life, plus a “library” mode for viewing certain records and in-game content offline after shutdown. The catch is that players must download the library data before March 23. The notice says that data generally can’t be moved to a new device and that the library won’t be supported after the game closes.

Competitive play continues for now. The Pokémon Unite Aeos Crown 2027 Tokyo tournament will go ahead as planned, with qualifiers starting on December 5, 2026. The game’s guidelines on using its video and images will be withdrawn after service ends.

Pokémon Unite was co-developed by Tencent’s TiMi Studio Group and The Pokémon Company. It launched on Switch on July 21, 2021, and on mobile on September 22, 2021.

Why the Pokémon Unite end of service matters

Unite was the Pokémon franchise’s first serious attempt at a team-based competitive game. It took the MOBA format, simplified the controls, and put it on Switch with cross-play to phones. According to Siliconera, it had passed 200 million downloads across platforms by July 2025, a count that includes the separate mainland Chinese version. It also built its own competitive circuit, which is why the Aeos Crown tournament can still run during the wind-down.

Shutting down a game that size with nearly five months’ notice, while a tournament is still running, looks like a planned wind-down rather than a sudden collapse. But neither company has given a reason, and that silence is worth noting. The game only marked its fifth anniversary this year, with a live-action short announced in June. For players, the practical cost is the end of a live-service library of Holowear and licenses many of them paid for. The offline library mode keeps the records but not the matches.

It also raises a question about the Pokémon lineup. The Pokémon Company has not said whether it plans another real-time team battle game or is stepping away from the MOBA space after Unite.

What we know vs what is rumored

  • Confirmed: Service ends March 23, 2027, at 00:00 UTC on Switch and mobile. Gem sales and new UNITE Club sign-ups stopped on October 27.
  • Confirmed: A November 12 update adds a farewell event and an offline library mode, which requires a data download before shutdown.
  • Confirmed: The Aeos Crown 2027 Tokyo tournament continues, with qualifiers from December 5.
  • Unconfirmed: Siliconera says refunds will be available after the game ends, but we could not find refund details in the official English notice. Check the official site for your region before counting on one.
  • Unconfirmed: any reason for the shutdown, the fate of the mainland Chinese version, and whether a successor is planned.

What happens next

The next milestone is the November 12 farewell update, followed by Aeos Crown qualifiers from December 5. Players with unspent Aeos gems should use them before March 23, 2027, and anyone who wants to keep their records should download the library data before the servers go dark.
