Death Stranding Isolations Anime Teaser Sets Disney+ Run for 2027

Lead: Death Stranding Isolations, the original anime set in Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding world, got its first teaser trailer and a fuller staff list, and it remains slated to stream exclusively on Disney+ in 2027.

What happened

Kojima Productions released the teaser and new details late on October 29 (the morning of October 30 in Japan). The series, first announced in 2025, tells a new story separate from the games. It is set in North America right after Sam, the games’ protagonist, reconnects the continent through the Chiral Network, and it follows a young girl who has grown used to living in total isolation until chance encounters pull her out into a world she no longer recognizes. The teaser’s tagline is a single line from her: “My mom became a crater.”

The official synopsis also teases a supporting cast that walks a different path from Sam and his Bridges allies, including an old man who connects people in an unexplained way, a female soldier caught in a cycle of war, and a boy furious at how absurd his life has become.

Confirmed staff, per the studio’s announcement as reported by Gematsu:

  • Executive producer: Hideo Kojima
  • Director: Takayuki Sano
  • Series composition and screenplay: Tow Ubukata, newly announced
  • Original character design: Ilya Kuvshinov
  • Animation: E&H production, in a traditional hand-drawn 2D style
  • Production: Kojima Productions

Why Death Stranding Isolations matters

Game-to-anime adaptations usually retell the game. This one deliberately does not, which is the smart call for Death Stranding, a story whose appeal is mood and loneliness more than plot beats fans already know. Staffing backs up the ambition. Ubukata is the award-winning author of Mardock Scramble and has written for Psycho-Pass and Ghost in the Shell, so the scripts are in the hands of someone fluent in strange, bleak science fiction. IGN notes Sano’s résumé includes animation direction on Attack on Titan’s final season and work on Jujutsu Kaisen, and E&H production’s credits include Ninja Kamui and the Magic Knight Rayearth TV series.

Ilya Kuvshinov designing the characters is the other big hook. His style is instantly recognizable, and the teaser’s blonde, wide-eyed heroine already looks like his work. For Disney+, it is another high-profile anime exclusive and a test of whether a game brand without its famous lead can carry a series.

The hand-drawn 2D approach is worth noting too. The games use a realistic 3D look built around star actors, so moving it into traditional animation forces the team to reinvent the world’s textures, from timefall rain to the tar that engulfs the girl in her teaser nightmare. If that translation works, it gives the franchise a second visual identity that does not depend on a famous cast.

What we know vs what is rumored

  • Confirmed: Teaser trailer, synopsis and staff list above; Disney+ exclusive streaming in 2027.
  • Confirmed: Original story, separate from the games, set after Sam reconnects America.
  • Unconfirmed: Premiere date, episode count and voice cast. None have been announced.
  • Unconfirmed: Whether Sam or other game characters appear on screen. The synopsis mentions him only as backstory.

What happens next

Disney+ has only committed to 2027, so the next milestones are a voice cast, a full trailer and a premiere date. Kojima Productions has been rolling out news on its own channels, so expect the next reveal there first.
