Street Fighter Movie Box Office Opens at $51.1M, Below $70M Hopes

Lead: The Street Fighter movie box office debut landed at an estimated $51.1 million worldwide, enough for first place this weekend but well short of the roughly $70 million global start the film’s backers were hoping for.

What happened at the Street Fighter movie box office

Paramount, Legendary and Capcom’s live-action Street Fighter opened October 16–18 with an estimated $31 million from 3,575 theaters in North America and $20.1 million from 65 international markets, according to weekend figures reported by Deadline and IGN. That made it the No. 1 film worldwide for the frame. Thursday previews contributed about $4 million.

The PG-13 film is directed by Kitao Sakurai. Andrew Koji plays Ryu, Noah Centineo plays Ken, Callina Liang plays Chun-Li, David Dastmalchian plays M. Bison and Jason Momoa plays Blanka. Deadline reports the movie cost a net $82 million and was co-financed by Legendary and Capcom, with Paramount handling distribution.

Audience polling was middling. Deadline reports a B- CinemaScore, below the B+ for 2021’s Mortal Kombat and the B for this year’s Mortal Kombat 2. Men over 35 made up about 45% of the domestic crowd, while parents and kids under 12 were only 11%. IMAX screens added $7.7 million globally.

Overseas, the film opened No. 1 in the UK ($3.3 million), Mexico and Australia. It placed No. 2 in the UAE with $705,000, and the wider Middle East region added $1.4 million. Japan, Capcom’s home market, delivered $875,000 for a No. 5 rank.

Why it matters

Capcom is no longer just licensing its games to Hollywood. It put its own money into this one, so the opening is a direct read on how far the Street Fighter name travels outside the fighting-game community. The answer so far: the core fans showed up, and the wider family audience mostly did not. Deadline’s breakdown points to an older, male-heavy crowd, which is exactly the group the 1987 arcade original raised.

Context helps. The 1994 Jean-Claude Van Damme film opened to $6.8 million in North America and finished with $33.4 million there, so this weekend alone nearly matches that entire domestic run, before inflation. Against modern rivals it looks softer. Mortal Kombat 2 opened to about $63 million worldwide earlier this year, although Deadline notes Street Fighter‘s international start was 4% ahead of it.

Capcom’s other big-screen bet is doing better. Sony and Constantin’s Resident Evil has passed $361 million worldwide after five weekends, per Deadline. Two Capcom adaptations sitting in the global top three at once is a strong sign that the company’s IP has real theatrical pull. The question is whether a fighting game with a huge roster can sustain a franchise the way a horror series has.

Critics were tougher than fans. IGN scored the film 6/10 and cited a 41% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, while Deadline listed 47% before opening day. Audience scores sat around 79–80% across both reports. The gap reflects different snapshot times, not a dispute over the reviews.

What we know vs what is rumored

  • Confirmed: an estimated $51.1 million global opening, including $31 million in North America and $20.1 million from 65 markets.
  • Confirmed: a net budget of $82 million co-financed by Legendary and Capcom, with Paramount distributing (per Deadline).
  • Confirmed: a B- CinemaScore and an IGN review score of 6/10.
  • Unconfirmed: any sequel plans. Neither source reports a greenlight, and talk of a Mortal Kombat crossover remains teasing, not an announcement.
  • Unconfirmed: the final weekend total. These are studio estimates, and actuals usually arrive on Monday.

What happens next

Actual weekend numbers are due Monday, October 19, and the second-weekend drop will show whether word of mouth can make up for the reviews. Deadline’s sources say the film should be fine after home release and other later revenue, but a quick fall-off would make a sequel a harder sell. Premium-format holds and next weekend’s competition will decide how far it climbs past that $82 million budget.
