Lead: Call of Duty lifetime revenue has passed $40 billion, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced on October 26, three days after Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launched worldwide.
What happened
Sharma shared the milestone in a post on her X account, pairing it with a graphic of review scores for Modern Warfare 4. She called the new game “one of the most celebrated Call of Duty games in its 24-year history” and thanked Activision’s developers and the players.
Modern Warfare 4, the 23rd mainline entry, went live on October 23 after a campaign early access period that opened on October 16. It is out on PlayStation 5 and PC among other platforms, and ships with a story campaign, multiplayer and the DMZ extraction mode. The official Call of Duty account has pointed to Metacritic scores of 89 on PlayStation and 86 on PC.
The post gave no breakdown of the figure. It does not say how much came from the new game, which platforms or years contributed most, or how the total is calculated.
Why Call of Duty lifetime revenue matters
A lifetime number is the safest stat a publisher can share, because it only ever goes up. Older Call of Duty launches came with specific bragging rights. Activision used to compare first-day sales to Hollywood box office records, quoting dollar amounts for the first 24 hours. Kotaku points out that this year’s messaging is noticeably vaguer, and that MW4’s concurrent player count on Steam has been running below Black Ops 6’s, even though MW4 skipped a day-one Game Pass release. Steam is only one storefront, so that comparison doesn’t tell the whole story.
So there are two ways to read it. The positive one is that the franchise still prints money, and MW4 is reviewing better than any entry in years. The cautious one is that a franchise-wide total tells you nothing about whether this year’s game is selling as well as the last few. Both can be true at once.
It also matters for Xbox as a business. Activision is now part of Xbox, which has been through a restructure under Sharma this year, and Call of Duty is the centerpiece of Microsoft’s Activision purchase. Any signal about its health gets read as a signal about Xbox strategy, including the choice to keep the series off Game Pass at launch this year.
What we know vs what is rumored
- Confirmed: Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said Call of Duty has passed $40 billion in lifetime franchise revenue.
- Confirmed: Modern Warfare 4 launched on October 23 and is the 23rd mainline entry in the series.
- Unconfirmed: unit sales or revenue for Modern Warfare 4 itself. Activision and Microsoft have not shared launch-week numbers.
- Unconfirmed: how the $40 billion is counted, and over what period.
What happens next
Microsoft’s next earnings call is on October 28, the most likely place for harder numbers on Modern Warfare 4’s launch. Post-launch content is already rolling out, with the Shipment map teased for October 27. Peter Berg’s Call of Duty movie is dated for June 30, 2028, so the brand’s push beyond games is still a couple of years away.
