Lead: Phoenix Cyclops joins Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls on November 2 as the first Year 1 DLC fighter, Arc System Works confirmed alongside a new gameplay trailer.
What happened
Arc System Works producer Takeshi Yamanaka revealed the Phoenix Cyclops gameplay trailer in an October 7 post on the PlayStation Blog. Phoenix Cyclops is the first character in the game’s Year 1 Pass and arrives November 2. He is voiced by Ray Chase, who, as Anime News Network notes, also plays Cyclops in the X-Men ’97 animated series. Cyclops’ “Classic” and “Legacy” DLC costumes launch the same day.
Marvel Tōkon is a 4v4 tag team fighter from PlayStation Studios, Arc System Works, and Marvel Games. It launched on PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store on August 6 (August 7 in Japan) with 20 characters. According to ANN, the Ultimate Edition includes the Year One pass, which covers four characters and one stage.
Two other offers started on October 7: the game’s first-ever PlayStation Store sale, with the Ultimate Edition discounted, and a 3-hour PlayStation Plus Game Trial. Players at EVO France, running October 9 to 11, can try Phoenix Cyclops at the Marvel Tōkon booth before release.
Yamanaka describes him as an all-rounder built around Optic Blasts that work at both long and close range, plus fire-based attacks that cover large parts of the screen. Using Optic Blasts builds Phoenix Force energy called Solar Shards. With four Solar Shards, Cyclops can transform into his Dark Phoenix form, which grants a big temporary power boost but drains his health. The mechanic is inspired by the Avengers vs. X-Men storyline, where Cyclops became one of the Phoenix Five.
The team says Cyclops was an early candidate for the roster’s Unbreakable X-Men lineup, but his long history in Marvel fighting games made a straight version feel too familiar. The narrative team pitched the Phoenix take instead, and the designers gave him a deliberately younger look to contrast with the Phoenix Force aura. The Classic and Legacy costumes exist for players who still want the traditional look.
Why Phoenix Cyclops matters
First DLC characters set the tone for a fighting game’s post-launch life, and Arc System Works has chosen a reinterpretation over the safe pick. That is a gamble with a character this iconic, but it is also exactly what keeps a roster from feeling like a greatest-hits remix of older Marvel fighters. A transformation mechanic with a real health cost should give Cyclops a distinct risk-and-reward rhythm, the kind of hook that tends to keep a new character in tournament rotation after launch week.
The timing is smart, too. Pairing the reveal with a first-ever sale, a free trial, and a hands-on at EVO France roughly two months after launch is a clear push to grow the player base before the DLC lands. Casting Ray Chase ties the game to the version of Cyclops many newer fans know from X-Men ’97.
For artists, Arc System Works’ anime-style 3D look is one of the best references around for how to translate a comic costume into clean, cel-shaded shapes. The Phoenix redesign, with its younger face and bold flame silhouette, is a good study in how small proportion changes shift a character’s age and attitude.

What happens next
The next checkpoint is EVO France this weekend, where the first hands-on impressions should show how strong the Dark Phoenix transformation really is. Phoenix Cyclops and his costumes then go live on November 2. The remaining Year 1 characters and the stage have not been named or dated yet.
