Lead: Nagoshi Studio, the NetEase-backed developer led by Yakuza creator Toshihiro Nagoshi, has been formally dissolved, a Nagoshi Studio shutdown that leaves its only announced game, Gang of Dragon, without a studio.
What happened
A dissolution notice for Nagoshi Studio appeared on page 176 of Japan’s government gazette, Kanpo, on November 2, 2026. It says shareholders voted to dissolve the company on October 31. The notice names Minoru Morinaga as liquidator and gives creditors two months to file claims. As Inven Global points out, this is a voluntary liquidation that winds the company up, not a bankruptcy.
The Tokyo-based Nagoshi Studio was founded in November 2021 as a NetEase Games subsidiary, after Nagoshi left SEGA, where he created the Yakuza (Like a Dragon) series. Its debut project, Gang of Dragon, was revealed at The Game Awards in December 2025. It is a Kabukicho-set action-adventure starring Korean actor Ma Dong-seok (Don Lee) as a senior member of a Korean crime syndicate operating in Tokyo.
Things went downhill quickly after that reveal:
- March 2026: Bloomberg reported that NetEase would stop funding the studio in May. Per that report, finishing Gang of Dragon needed at least another 7 billion yen, and Nagoshi was looking for new backers.
- May 2026: the studio’s website went offline, and key developers were reported to have left.
- October 2026: Game*Spark checked Japan’s company registry and found that Nagoshi and the other directors had not been reappointed after their terms ended on March 31. A single representative director, Morinaga, remained.
Why the Nagoshi Studio shutdown matters
The closure is the clearest sign yet that NetEase is backing away from its big push into Japanese console development. NetEase spent heavily recruiting veteran Japanese creators earlier this decade, and Nagoshi was the biggest name on that list. Losing his studio before it shipped anything is a costly, public end to that bet.
It also leaves one of the industry’s best-known creators without a team. Nagoshi has made crime dramas set in a fictional version of Kabukicho for two decades. Gang of Dragon looked like his attempt to do that again with a bigger budget and a movie star. Fans had been waiting for any sign of life since the spring, and a formal liquidation notice is close to the worst answer they could get. The only hope left is that someone takes over the project.
What we know vs what is rumored
- Confirmed: shareholders voted to dissolve Nagoshi Studio on October 31, 2026, and the gazette notice ran on November 2, 2026, with a liquidator appointed.
- Confirmed: Gang of Dragon has not been officially cancelled. At the time of writing, its Steam page was still live with no release date.
- Unconfirmed: whether the game’s rights, assets or staff will move to another company or investor. No one has announced anything.
- Unconfirmed: Nagoshi’s next move. VGC’s editor-in-chief said on a podcast in October that Nagoshi had been talking to other studios, but he called it a rumor himself.
What happens next
The two-month window for creditor claims runs into early January 2027, and then liquidation should finish. Watch for any statement from NetEase or Nagoshi about the Gang of Dragon rights. Also watch whether the Steam listing is pulled, which would be the clearest practical sign that the game is dead. If a new publisher steps in, we’ll report it.
