Lead: The Yona of the Dawn sequel anime finally has a studio: Pierrot Films, the label Studio Pierrot set up in 2024, will animate the long-awaited follow-up to the 2014 TV series.
What happened
The official X account for the Yona of the Dawn (Akatsuki no Yona) TV anime announced on Tuesday, October 20, that Pierrot Films is handling animation production on the sequel. Hakusensha’s Hana to Yume special site for the manga’s completion posted the same update the same day and told fans to wait for further news.
The sequel itself is not new news. Hana to Yume first confirmed that a follow-up anime was in the works in December 2025, in the same issue that ran the final chapter of Mizuho Kusanagi’s manga. What was missing until now was any production detail at all, and the studio is the first piece to land.
The timing lines up with the end of the print run. The 48th and final compiled volume went on sale in Japan on October 20. The manga ran in Hana to Yume from 2009 to 2025, and a four-chapter gaiden side story wrapped in the magazine on July 3, 2026. ORICON NEWS reports the series has passed 15 million copies in circulation. Viz Media publishes the manga in English and released volume 46 on July 3.
Pierrot Films’ credits so far include Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War and the fourth season of Mr. Osomatsu. Pierrot also made the original Yona of the Dawn TV anime, which premiered in 2014 and ran 24 episodes, followed by three original anime DVD episodes released in 2015 and 2016. Funimation handled the English home video release.
Why the Yona of the Dawn sequel matters
This is one of the longest “please, a season two” campaigns in shoujo anime. The 2014 series covered only the opening stretch of what became a 48-volume story, ending just as Yona’s journey was getting bigger in scope. Fans have spent more than a decade reading ahead in the manga while the anime sat frozen, and the stage plays and a 2024 musical kept the brand alive without moving the animated story at all.
Keeping the sequel inside the Pierrot family is the safest call the committee could have made. Pierrot Films’ biggest showcase, Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, is exactly the kind of job Yona needs: reviving a series years after its first run and carrying it to a finished ending without the seams showing. The Bleach finale only just aired, which means the label’s most visible team has a fresh track record to point to.
The finished manga also changes the math. With 48 volumes complete and the gaiden wrapped, the production team knows exactly where the story ends. That removes the usual risk of an anime-original detour and makes a long, faithful run at least possible. Whether the committee commits to that is another question, and nobody has said yet.

What happens next
The announcement asks fans to wait for follow-up news, so the next beats should be staff, cast, and a release window, most likely through the official X account and Hana to Yume. For English readers, Viz Media’s edition reached volume 46 in July, so newcomers have plenty of room to catch up before any new episodes air. We will update when a date or key visual appears.
