Lead: The Bocchi the Rock! movie is real and it is a prequel: Bocchi the Rock! Hoshi no Ashiato will open in Japanese theaters in 2027, with CloverWorks animating a story about Nijika and her older sister Seika.
What happened
The official Bocchi the Rock! anime account and Aniplex announced the film on Sunday, November 1, 2026, alongside a teaser trailer and a teaser visual. The full Japanese title is Eiga Bocchi the Rock! Hoshi no Ashiato. English outlets are translating the subtitle differently: Anime News Network uses “Footprints of the Stars,” while Crunchyroll uses “Starry Footprints.” Only the year has been given so far, with no exact opening date.
The film adapts “Hoshi ni Tamukeru Ai no Hana,” the bonus story printed at the end of Aki Hamaji’s fifth manga volume. It is set before Kessoku Band exists and centers on the Ijichi sisters. Two cast members are confirmed on the teaser visual:
- Maaya Uchida as Seika Ijichi
- Sayumi Suzushiro as Nijika Ijichi, returning from the TV series
Behind the camera, Shin Wakabayashi (Wonder Egg Priority) directs at CloverWorks. Erika Yoshida, who wrote the 2022 TV series, returns for the screenplay. Yukiko Horiguchi, the character designer behind K-ON!, is designing the characters. According to Anime.com, Hamaji said the story fills in the sisters’ past that the TV anime hinted at near the end of episode 8 and follows the road to the opening of STARRY, the live house Seika runs.
Aniplex also put the first advance movie tickets (Mubichike) on sale from November 6 at 1,600 yen, with a limited sticker bonus that uses new Horiguchi art of Seika and Nijika.
Why the Bocchi the Rock! movie matters
This is a smart, slightly unexpected move. The TV series became one of the biggest anime hits of 2022 and turned Kessoku Band into a real touring act. The two 2024 compilation films were recaps, so this is the first time the franchise has made original new animation for theaters. Choosing a Seika story instead of a straight sequel also gives the team room to tell a quieter, more grown-up tale. The trailer itself teases a story about the sisters’ dream that begins with a parting.
The staff list is the headline for longtime fans. Horiguchi’s soft, rounded style shaped the look of a whole era of Kyoto Animation slice-of-life shows. Pairing her with Wakabayashi, whose Wonder Egg Priority was all about stylish, emotional direction, suggests a film with its own look rather than a copy of the TV designs. There’s one catch. The second TV season was announced in February 2025 with Yūsuke Yamamoto taking over as director, and it still has no date. Fans will reasonably ask which arrives first.
