Ghost of Tsushima Legends Anime Delayed to 2028 With New Cast

Lead: Crunchyroll confirmed at New York Comic Con that the Ghost of Tsushima: Legends anime now targets a 2028 premiere, with Mayumi Sako and Shinya Fukumatsu joining the cast and new music and sound staff locked in.

What happened

During Crunchyroll’s New York Comic Con 2026 showcase on Thursday, October 8, the streamer and partners updated the Ghost of Tsushima: Legends (Ghost of Tsushima: Kuroudo Kitan) anime. The series was previously lined up for an exclusive Crunchyroll debut in 2027. That window has slipped to 2028, according to Anime News Network’s report of the panel and matching coverage from Gematsu and Animation Magazine.

Voice actress Mayumi Sako and actor Shinya Fukumatsu were announced for the cast. Gematsu notes that Sako previously voiced Tomoe in the original Ghost of Tsushima game, while Fukumatsu is known for roles such as Bomb in One-Punch Man. Specific character assignments for the anime were not detailed in the Thursday briefings.

The creative spine remains familiar. Takanobu Mizuno (Star Wars: Visions “The Duel”) is directing at Kamikaze Douga. Gen Urobuchi handles story composition and shares script duties with Satoshi Maejima. Takashi Okazaki is the character designer. HAYATE Inc. oversees production, Aniplex is collaborating, and Sony Music is the music and soundtrack partner. PlayStation Productions remains tied to the adaptation of the Legends multiplayer mode from Sucker Punch Productions and Sony Interactive Entertainment.

New staff named at NYCC include composer Keiji Inai (Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?, This Monster Wants to Eat Me), sound director Yoshikazu Iwanami (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, KONOSUBA), sound effects artist Yasumasa Koyama (Ajin, Brave Bang Bravern!), and calligrapher Gyousyou Suzuki, who worked on the Japanese title lettering for Kuroudo Kitan.

Attendees also saw a work-in-progress first look / trailer tease for the series, which Animation Magazine and The Outerhaven described as an early production peek rather than a finished premiere cut.

Why it matters

Ghost of Tsushima is one of PlayStation’s flagship modern action titles, and Legends—the folklore-focused multiplayer mode that later shipped as a standalone—already sits apart from Jin Sakai’s historical guerrilla campaign. Putting that mode into an anime with Urobuchi on story and Kamikaze Douga in the director’s chair keeps the project in a high-visibility lane for both game fans and anime viewers.

A 2028 shift is the hard news. Year delays on big IP adaptations usually signal either a longer polish cycle, schedule collisions across HAYATE / Aniplex / PlayStation Productions partners, or both. For Crunchyroll, the update also sits inside a crowded NYCC slate that included Sekiro: No Defeat clips and a WEBTOON co-production push, so clarifying Legends’ timing helps fans plan expectations instead of treating 2027 as locked.

Cast and audio staff adds also matter for a myth-heavy samurai fantasy tone. Naming Inai, Iwanami, and Koyama early suggests the soundtrack and soundscape are being treated as tentpoles, not afterthoughts—useful when the game’s identity is as much atmosphere as combat.

What we know vs what is rumored

  • Confirmed: Premiere window moved from 2027 to 2028 on Crunchyroll, per Crunchyroll’s NYCC presentation as reported by ANN, Gematsu, and Animation Magazine.
  • Confirmed: Mayumi Sako and Shinya Fukumatsu join the voice cast; additional music and sound staff named above.
  • Confirmed: Mizuno directs at Kamikaze Douga; Urobuchi and Maejima on scripts; Okazaki on character design; HAYATE production with Aniplex and PlayStation Productions collaboration.
  • Unconfirmed: Exact episode count, seasonal TV slot, English dub timeline, and which characters Sako and Fukumatsu will play.
  • Unconfirmed: Whether the delay is driven by animation volume, trailer feedback, or partner scheduling—no official cause was published with the date change.

What happens next

Expect more cast reveals, a cleaner public trailer, and firmer 2028 quarter guidance as HAYATE and Crunchyroll move past the WIP first look. Fans following Ghost of Yōtei and the broader PlayStation Productions slate should treat 2028 as the working target until a month or season is locked. Until then, the takeaway from NYCC is simple: Legends is still coming, the creative team is expanding, and the calendar just got a year longer.
