Lead: The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel is the official title of Bethesda’s next fantasy RPG, revealed on November 3 as Bethesda Game Studios marked its 40th anniversary.
What happened
Publisher Bethesda Softworks and developer Bethesda Game Studios revealed the subtitle in a short “Official Name Reveal” teaser, released alongside a video celebrating the studio’s 40 years. Xbox Wire published the reveal with the new logo, and Gematsu and IGN both reported the announcement the same day.
The teaser ends on an in-world quote attributed to Yazar, a Moth Priest to High Queen Iradne of Hammerfell, dated 4E 206. The quote speaks of a lost future and “sands of time scattered by fate”. In longtime series lore, Sentinel is a port city in Hammerfell, the desert province of the Redguards. In a post on X, Bethesda Game Studios said it was finally revealing “the name and location”, and added that development continues and “it’ll be some time before we’re ready to share more.”
No release date, release window or platform list came with the reveal. The game was first teased at E3 in June 2018, with only a title card and a landscape shot.
Why The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel matters
Skyrim launched in 2011 and is still being re-released and modded, which makes its sequel one of the most anticipated games anywhere. After more than eight years of silence following the 2018 teaser, even a subtitle is real information. It confirms a setting fans have argued about since day one, and it gives the project a concrete identity inside Microsoft’s first-party lineup.
The timing is just as telling. Bethesda tied the reveal to an anniversary celebration rather than a gameplay showcase, and paired it with an explicit warning that more news is a while away. That is the studio managing expectations: it confirms the game is moving forward without suggesting a launch is close. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, as relayed by IGN, said the game is still more than two years away, and that the 2018 teaser was meant to soften the blow of Fallout 76 rather than signal a near release.
Hammerfell is a significant choice. The province has not been the main stage of a single-player Elder Scrolls game since the 1990s, so the series’ deserts, coasts and Redguard culture could feel new to a generation that mostly knows Skyrim’s snow.
What we know vs what is rumored
- Confirmed: The official title is The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel, from Bethesda Softworks and Bethesda Game Studios.
- Confirmed: Bethesda says development continues and that it will be “some time” before it shares more.
- Confirmed: The teaser’s closing quote is attributed to a Moth Priest serving the High Queen of Hammerfell.
- Unconfirmed: Sentinel as the main location is our reading of established lore and Bethesda’s “name and location” remark; Bethesda has not detailed the map.
- Unconfirmed: The report that the game is more than two years from release comes from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, not Bethesda.
- Unconfirmed: Platforms, release window and pricing have not been announced.
What happens next
Do not expect gameplay soon. Bethesda has said plainly that it is not ready to share more, and the studio has historically shown its big RPGs at Xbox showcases, often months or years before launch. The next realistic moment for news is a future Xbox showcase, but nothing has been scheduled for Sentinel. Until then, the logo, the Hammerfell quote and the name are all fans have to go on.
