Lead: The Nue’s Exorcist anime is officially happening: Kōta Kawae’s Weekly Shonen Jump series gets a TV adaptation from Studio Hibari that will air on TV Asahi in summer 2027.
What happened
Shueisha’s Jump Press livestream on Monday, October 12, announced that Nue’s Exorcist (Nue no Onmyōji) is getting a television anime. The reveal came with a teaser video, a teaser visual, the main cast and the core staff, and the official anime website posted the news the same day.
The official site lists the broadcast as summer 2027 on TV Asahi’s nationwide network. Hiroyuki Hashimoto (Classroom of the Elite, Magical Girl Raising Project) directs at Studio Hibari. Hiroshi Seko (Dorohedoro, DAN DA DAN) handles series composition, Shunpei Mochizuki (Sakugan) designs the characters, Takayuki Yamaguchi is sound director, and MONACA (NieR:Automata Ver1.1a) composes the music.
The three announced leads are:
- Kaito Miura as Gakuro Yajima
- Saori Ōnishi as Nue
- Sayumi Suzushiro as Kazusa Suo (Anime News Network’s romanization)
Kawae launched the manga in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2023. Shueisha released the 16th Japanese volume on September 4, while Viz Media publishes it in English (volume 8 arrived September 1) and MANGA Plus carries it digitally. The story follows Gakuro, an outcast who can see spirits and wants nothing to do with them, until he wanders into a sealed room at school and meets Nue, a powerful, pop-culture-obsessed spirit who wants him to start hunting the nasty ones.
Why the Nue’s Exorcist anime matters
This one has been coming for a while. Nue’s Exorcist topped the AnimeJapan 2025 “Manga We Want to See Animated” poll, so the adaptation lands with a built-in audience that has been asking for it by name. Jump has spent the last few years turning supernatural action titles into tentpole anime, and this is the next one in that pipeline.
The staff list is the real headline. Seko is one of the busiest writers in action anime right now, and his work on DAN DA DAN and Dorohedoro shows he can handle chaotic, genre-mashing material without losing the jokes. A TV Asahi network slot also points to a mainstream push rather than a late-night niche run. MONACA on music is a nice bonus for anyone who still has the NieR soundtracks on repeat.
The open question is the action. A teaser only shows so much, so the first full trailer will carry a lot of weight in setting expectations for how Studio Hibari handles the spirit fights. For artists, the teaser visual is already a strong reference: Nue’s long, sharp silhouette against Gakuro’s spiky, flame-edged look is a clean study in contrasting character shapes.
What we know vs what is rumored
- Confirmed: TV anime adaptation of Kōta Kawae’s Nue’s Exorcist, airing summer 2027 on TV Asahi’s nationwide network.
- Confirmed: Hiroyuki Hashimoto directs at Studio Hibari, with Hiroshi Seko, Shunpei Mochizuki, Takayuki Yamaguchi and MONACA on staff.
- Confirmed: Kaito Miura, Saori Ōnishi and Sayumi Suzushiro lead the cast; a teaser video and teaser visual are out.
- Unconfirmed: exact premiere date, episode count, theme songs and international streaming partner. The official site lists two more characters as “coming soon,” so more cast is expected.
What happens next
Expect more cast reveals for the characters still marked “coming soon” on the official site, followed by a full trailer and a firm premiere date as summer 2027 gets closer. No overseas streamer has been named yet; watch the official X account and the Jump event calendar for the next update. Until then, the manga is the place to catch up, with 16 volumes out in Japan and new chapters on MANGA Plus.
